Welcome

At Project BLACC our farm is ready for learning. BLACC’s Agriculture/Farming program can help you to find successful career paths and feed your community. America is the world leader in crop production, and Charles City County has an incredible legacy as an agriculture leader.  Project BLACC hopes to continue this tradition by helping our trainees learn about the latest agricultural science, understand the best practices, and ultimately, find rewarding careers in the agriculture field.

AGRICULTURE

As of 2022, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, Charles City County had 145 producers, and 135 of those producers identified as white. In addition to the lack of diverse farm owners, 59 of the 145 producers were 65 or older.  There is a pressing need for opportunities for young, Black and Indigenous Charles City residents to own or manage their own farms.

Agriculture is the largest industry in Virginia, and Charles City County has over 33,000 acres of farmland. As of 2022, the market value of the produce sold from these farms had increased by 39% since 2017.  More and more Virginians are interested in buying and eating locally grown food for environmental and taste reasons, and Charles City County is well positioned to meet that demand.

Project BLACC will prepare participants for good careers in agriculture.  We want to connect Charles City residents with the training they need for 21st century agriculture. We'll explore agricultural sciences, farm management skills, how to operate machinery, and planting. Join us!

Agriculture curriculum & training

Hands on Training

Project BLACC operates a 7 acre farm that consists of vegetation, composting and livestock practices. On our farm we will teach you the basic principles of farming and sustainable methods for soil amending. The hands on experience gives you real world experience on what it takes to work on a farm as well as manage a farm for profit.

Curriculum

Our curriculum starts with learning the basic practices of farming. The following areas are:

  • Soil Amending
  • Seed Preservation
  • Planting Planning
  • Plant / Weed Management
  • Pricing for selling plants
  • Pest Management
  • Harvesting Techniques
  • No Till Practices

Timeframe for training

The training programs with our farm takes about 1 years of training to experience the entire season of agriculture. With our program we do hire directly and also provide connections to other farmers for those who want to work within the industry. Additionally we help those who want to start a farm and operate it as a profitable model. We also work with local universities and can provide pathways to higher education in the many careers in Agriculture.
